We previously published a news story of scientific fraud based on the comments of a medicine journal. Thus reinstate the good name of Paolo Macchiarini. on the UCV Bioethics Observatory website referring to the possible medical malpractice of Dr. Paolo Macchiarini in his work on artificial trachea transplants. Our report was principally written using information from the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (2014; 147, 1128-32), which in turn obtained its information from journals Science (2013; 340, 226-268) and The Lancet (2014; 383, 238-244), which analysed patient outcomes five years after the trachea transplants. However, on 14th April the same year, a spokesperson for the Karolinska Institute, where Macchiarini had carried out his clinical studies, made public a report from the Institute itself. Following an exhaustive evaluation of Macchiarini’s studies, they Institute concluded that there was no evidence to support the accusation that the Italian surgeon had engaged in medical malpractice.
It is a pleasure for us to be able to refute our news, which was based on the comments of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, The Lancet and Science, and thus help to reinstate the good name of Paolo Macchiarini.
