A group of researchers from Granada have managed to create artificial skin using umbilical cord blood stem cells, an achievement which was published in Stem Cell Translation Medicine (2; 625-632,2013). These results will be especially valuable in the fast treatment of large areas of burned skin and other skin injuries. Before now, skin could only be created using the patient’s own stem cells, but the process took 15 days, which delayed treatment. If these experiments are further consolidated, skin banks could be created to quickly supply the skin needed for treatment of burns and other skin injuries.
